A lot of people using Mac’s aren’t aware how-to take a screenshot natively on your Mac running Lion. There are actually a few ways of going about performing this. Read below and get to screen capturing today.

  • Launch Preview
  • From the “File” menu select “Take Screen Shot” and choose one of three options:
  • From Selection – brings up the selection tool
  • From Window – enables the window selection tool
  • From Entire Screen – capture the entire screen (or both screens if you’re using two)

It’s very simple by using the key commands as well.

For your convenience, here are the options and their corresponding keys. (The Command key is the one with a picture of an Apple on it!)

  • Command-Shift-3: Take a screenshot of the screen, and save it as a file on the desktop
  • Command-Shift-4, then select an area: Take a screenshot of an area and save it as a file on the desktop
  • Command-Shift-4, then space, then click a window: Take a screenshot of a window and save it as a file on the desktop
  • Command-Control-Shift-3: Take a screenshot of the screen, and save it to the clipboard
  • Command-Control-Shift-4, then select an area: Take a screenshot of an area and save it to the clipboard
  • Command-Control-Shift-4, then space, then click a window: Take a screenshot of a window and save it to the clipboard

Your screen captures will automatically launch into Preview where they can be edited.
